UN rights chief ‘horrified’ by mass grave reports at Gaza hospitals

The UN’s human rights chief has said he is “horrified” by the destruction of Gaza’s Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals and the reports of “mass graves” being found at the sites after Israeli raids.

Volker Türk called for independent investigations into the deaths.

Palestinian officials said they had exhumed the bodies of almost 300 people at Nasser. It is not clear how they died or when they were buried.

Israel’s military said claims that it buried bodies there were “baseless”.

But it did say that during a two-week operation at the hospital in the city of Khan Younis in February, troops “examined” bodies buried by Palestinians “in places where intelligence indicated the possible presence of hostages”.

Ten hostages who have now been released have said that they were held at Nasser hospital for long periods during their captivity.

Prior to the Israeli operation at Nasser, staff there had said they were being forced to bury bodies in the hospital’s courtyard because nearby fighting prevented access to cemeteries. There were similar reports from al-Shifa before the first Israeli raid on the hospital took place in November.

The Israeli military has said it has raided a number of hospitals in Gaza during the war because Hamas fighters have been operating inside them – a claim Hamas and medical officials have denied.

The war began when Hamas gunmen carried out an unprecedented cross-border attack on southern Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people – mostly civilians – and taking 253 others back to Gaza as hostages.

More than 34,180 people – most of them children and women – have been killed in Gaza since then, the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry says.

A spokeswoman for the UN Human Rights Office said it was currently working on corroborating reports from Palestinian officials that 283 bodies had been found in Nasser hospital’s grounds, including 42 which had been identified.

“Victims had reportedly been buried deep in the ground and covered with waste,” Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.

“Among the deceased were allegedly older people, women and wounded, while others… were found with their hands tied and stripped of their clothes.”

Mr Türk called for independent, effective and transparent investigations into the deaths, adding: “Given the prevailing climate of impunity, this should include international investigators.”

“Hospitals are entitled to very special protection under international humanitarian law. And the intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others who are hors de combat [not participating in hostilities] is a war crime.”

On Monday, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Civil Defense force told BBC Arabic’s Gaza Today programme that it had received reports from local Palestinians that the bodies of a “large number” of people who had been killed during the war and buried in a makeshift cemetery in the hospital’s courtyard were moved to another location during the Israeli raid.

“After research and investigation, we learned that the occupation [Israeli] army had established a mass grave, pulled out the bodies that were in Nasser hospital, and buried them in this mass grave,” Mahmoud Basal said.

Gaza Today also spoke to a man who said he was searching there for the bodies of two male relatives which he alleged had been taken by Israeli troops during Israel’s recently concluded offensive in Khan Younis.

“After I had buried them in an apartment, the [Israelis] came and moved their bodies,” he said. “Every day we search for their bodies, but we fail to find them.”

Hamas has alleged that the bodies include people “executed in cold blood” by Israeli forces, without providing evidence.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Tuesday: “The claim that the IDF buried Palestinian bodies is baseless and unfounded.”

“During the IDF’s operation in the area of Nasser Hospital, in accordance to the effort to locate hostages and missing persons, corpses buried by Palestinians in the area of Nasser hospital were examined.

“The examination was conducted in a careful manner and exclusively in places where intelligence indicated the possible presence of hostages. The examination was carried out respectfully while maintaining the dignity of the deceased. Bodies examined, which did not belong to Israeli hostages, were returned to their place.”

The IDF said that its forces had detained “about 200 terrorists who were in the hospital” during the raid, and that they found ammunition as well as unused medicines intended for Israeli hostages.

It also insisted that the raid was carried out “in a targeted manner and without harming the hospital, the patients and the medical staff”.

However, three medical staff told the BBC last month that they were humiliated, beaten, doused with cold water, and forced to kneel for hours after being detained during the raid.

Medics who remained at Nasser after the Israeli takeover said they were unable to care for patients and that 13 died because of conditions there, including a lack of water, electricity and other supplies.

Reuters Palestinian officials tape off the courtyard of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City as workers search for human remains (8 April 2024)ReutersThe UN Human Rights Office said it had received reports that 30 bodies were buried in the courtyard of al-Shifa hospital

On 1 April, Israeli troops withdrew from al-Shifa hospital, which is in Gaza City, following what the IDF said was another “precise” operation carried out in response to intelligence that Hamas had regrouped there.

The IDF said at the time that 200 “terrorists” were killed in and around the hospital during the two-week raid. More than 500 others were detained, and weapons and intelligence were found “throughout the hospital”, it added.

After a mission gained access to the facility five days later, the World Health Organization (WHO) said al-Shifa was “now an empty shell”, with most of the buildings extensively damaged or destroyed, and the majority of equipment unusable or reduced to ashes.

It also said that “numerous shallow graves” had been dug just outside the emergency department, and the administrative and surgical buildings, and that “many dead bodies were partially buried with their limbs visible”.

The IDF also said it had avoided harm to patients at al-Shifa. But the WHO cited the acting hospital director as saying patients were held in abysmal conditions during the siege, and that at least 20 patients reportedly died due to a lack of access to care and limited movement authorised for medics.

Spokeswoman Ms Shamdasani said reports seen by the UN human rights office suggested that a total of 30 bodies were buried in the two graves and that 12 of them had been identified so far.

Gaza’s civil defence spokesman told CNN on 9 April that 381 bodies had been recovered from the vicinity of al-Shifa, but that the figure did not include people buried in the hospital’s grounds.

The UN human rights chief also deplored as “beyond warfare” a series of Israeli strikes on the southern city of Rafah in the past few days, which he said had killed mostly women and children.

The strikes included one on Saturday night, after which a premature baby was delivered from the womb of her pregnant mother, who was killed along with her husband and other daughter.

Mr Türk also again warned against a full-scale Israeli ground assault on Rafah, where 1.5 million displaced civilians are sheltering, saying it would lead to further breaches of international humanitarian law and human rights law.

All England 2024: Jonatan Christie torehkan sejarah, Fajar/Rian pertahankan gelar – ‘Hari ini saya tahu rasanya jadi juara’

Jonatan Christie juara tunggal putra All England

Jonatan Christie mencatat sejarah menjadi pemain tunggal putra Indonesia pertama dalam 30 tahun terakhir yang menjuarai turnamen badminton tertua di dunia, All England.

Pada nomor ganda putra, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto mampu mempertahankan gelar juara setelah menumbangkan pasangan Malaysia, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, dua gim langsung 21-16 21-16.

Kunci kemenangan Fajar/Rian

“Setelah All England tahun lalu, saya alami cedera pinggang.

Jonatan Christie persembahkan trofi juara

Di sektor ganda putra, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto memperbesar peluang mempertahankan gelar juara setelah mengalahkan pasangan Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi (Jepang) 21-18, 21-18.

“Peluangnya fifty fifty.

Sejarah tahun 1994

Terakhir kali all Indonesian final tunggal putra All England terjadi pada tahun 1994.

South Africa shooting: Johannesburg student killed by stray bullet

Shot of crime scene tape put up at a scene to warn off people

A university student has been killed and another seriously injured by stray bullets as gunmen shot dead two men in a parked car on a busy street near the centre of the South African city of Johannesburg, police say.

The students were hit when their bus was passing the scene of the shooting.

No arrests have so far been made.

Gun crime claims dozens of lives every day in South Africa but witnesses to these killings in broad daylight said they were shocked by what happened.

“Both the men in the vehicle and one student were declared dead while the other student was taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment,” police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi told the BBC when describing what happened on Thursday afternoon.

A police statement said the students had been caught in “crossfire”.

Images shared on social media show a man’s body hanging out of a car window. Another shows what appears to be someone being treated at the scene on a main road in Braamfontein, a district close to a number of university campuses.

The University of Johannesburg said both students who were affected were studying at their institution. The undergraduate who was killed was 18 years old and travelling to his residence when he was shot, the university said. It has offered counselling to those who witnessed the shooting.

Wits University, which is located close to the scene, suggested the incident could have been related to taxi violence.

Police refused to comment on this, telling the BBC that investigations were ongoing.

A witness told local broadcaster eNCA she saw a gunman escaping in a white getaway car.

Johannesburg city police spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the motive for the shooting was not known.

A student told eNCA that she heard multiple gunshots, followed by chaos.

“It was a really traumatic experience. It is really scary because it could have happened to anyone,” she said.

Another said she had witnessed previous incidents of violence in the area.

Police and forensic investigators are at the scene.

Between July and September last year an average of 34 people were shot dead every day in South Africa, police crime statistics say. https://surinamecop.com/

Sydney asbestos scare: How a mulch discovery has sent a city scrambling

Image caption,This park in Sydney suburb Chippendale is one of the sites affected

In January, an Australian child innocently brought home a couple of handfuls of garden mulch from near a playground in Sydney’s inner west.

Looking at the mulch, the child’s parent was horrified to spot what looked like chunks of bonded asbestos.

Their call to authorities has since revealed a contamination crisis which has now spread across the city, forcing the closure of many public parks, playgrounds and several schools.

As of Monday, 33 sites in Sydney and another in the town of Nowra had tested positive for the cancer-causing substance.

In addition to parks and schools, they include supermarkets, hospitals, housing estates and train stations.

New South Wales (NSW) officials now say there could be tainted woodchips at hundreds of locations.

The state’s government and environmental watchdog have set up a taskforce to investigate.

The mayor of the Inner West Council – which takes in the original exposure site at Rozelle Parklands – said the situation was “beyond belief”.

“As a parent whose children have been playing there myself, I understand how concerning this will be for many thousands of local people,” Darcy Byrne said.

The scare has kept thousands of school students at home and forced the cancellation of a major Mardi Gras party. There was also panic after potential exposure sites were identified – but quickly cleared – at the Sydney venue for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert.

State officials say they are working as quickly as possible to identify and test locations of concern.

“We do understand that it is a big problem… There is no doubt that there is a failure here,” NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe said.

Assessing the danger

Health authorities have warned the public to steer clear of the contaminated areas, which have been cordoned off.

But they have also sought to downplay the potential risk they pose.

Extended exposure to asbestos – which was once widely used in construction materials – can lead to a form of cancer called mesothelioma or the chronic lung disease asbestosis.

Most of the asbestos found so far is “bonded”, often with cement, which means it is less likely to break down and be inhaled. But one piece of the more concerning friable asbestos – which can be easily crushed into a powder – was found at a public park in suburb Surry Hills.

A generic picture of asbestos
Image caption,Asbestos is most dangerous when inhaled over an extended period, health officials say

“It’s really a material that primarily needs to be breathed in to be a risk,” said NSW Health’s Dr Jeremy McAnulty.

“Touching it, or just being in the environment, is typically not a risk for asbestos-related disease.”

Generally people need to breathe in a lot of the substance, and over a long period of time, to fall sick, he added.

The related illnesses take years – sometimes decades – to develop, and there is generally no testing for people who might have been exposed in the short term.

Australia began phasing out asbestos in the 1980s and banned it in 2003.

Where is it coming from?

All of the tainted mulch found so far has been supplied by landscaping products manufacturer Greenlife Resource Recovery, local media have reported.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) earlier this month banned the company from moving – or selling – the mulch from its facility in Bringelly, in south-western Sydney, while the watchdog investigates.

But the firm has repeatedly denied it is the source of the contamination, and it has launched a legal challenge over the ban.

They say their mulch has been tested repeatedly since the scare began – even by the EPA – and all results have been negative.

“There are media reports suggesting because [our facility] is the common source, then it must be responsible for the asbestos contamination. This is incorrect,” it said in a statement, arguing that contamination could have occurred at any point along the supply chain.

A person walks past an asbestos sign that is displayed at Victoria Park

The EPA is now undertaking a criminal investigation – believed to be the largest in state history – to find out “who has done the wrong thing”, the environment minister said.

Premier Chris Minns has added: “If there’s been a breach of the law then, of course, we’ll throw the book at them.”

But the saga has also put a spotlight on regulatory checks in NSW.

By law, suppliers must ensure mulch does not contain a range of contaminants like asbestos, engineered wood products, glass, metal or plastics – but it does not impose any specific testing requirements.

Some members of state parliament are calling for reform, which the government has said it will consider if recommended by the EPA. https://surinamecop.com/

Nvidia: Boss says AI at ‘tipping point’ as revenues soar

The boss of the world’s most valuable chip maker Nvidia said artificial intelligence (AI) is at a “tipping point” as it announced record sales.

The technology giant reported that revenues surged by 265% to $22bn (£17.4bn) in the three months to 28 January, compared to a year earlier.

For the year as a whole, turnover more than doubled to $60.9bn.

“Accelerated computing and generative AI have hit the tipping point,” said Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang.

“Demand is surging worldwide across companies, industries and nations.”

Nvidia also forecast a 233% jump in its quarterly revenues for the current quarter, beating analysts’ estimates.

“There was a lot riding on this last quarter and they actually absolutely knocked it out of the park,” Bob O’Donnell of Technalysis Research told the BBC.

“We’re starting to see mainstream usage of AI,” he added, highlighting that AI is not longer only used by specialised technology companies.

In addition to its AI chips, sales at the firm’s data centres have grown rapidly.

Its data centre business contributed the vast majority of its revenues in the most recent quarter after growing more than than five-fold over the last year.

Nvidia said gross profit for the final three months of its financial year rose by 338% to $16.8bn. Annual gross profit rose by 188% to $44.3bn.

However, the company said it faced several challenges including constraints on its supply chains.

The US has also tightened its restrictions on trade with China, the world’s second largest economy.

Ipek Ozkardeskaya, a senior analyst at Swissquote, told the BBC that Nvidia’s results had been “unusually amazing”.

But she added that Nvidia could face difficulties in addition to restrictions in China.

“Nvidia… will see challenges on the way up because first the revenue growth will likely stabilise and the euphoria regarding these growth and growth perceptions will level out,” she said.

The company is also likely to face competition and regulation issues, Ms Ozkardeskaya added, and it could be “constrained by their own capacity to respond to this fast-surging demand”.

AI’s public profile has risen sharply since the launch in 2022 of ChatGPT, which was developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

ChatGPT and other similar systems use huge amounts of data to create convincing human-like responses to user queries.

They are expected to dramatically change the way people search for information online.

Nvidia’s stock market value has soared by 225% over the last year, making it one of the most valuable companies in the US. Its share price jumped by more than 9% in extended New York trading. https://clasicccop.com/

Sebelum menyalurkan hak pilihnya, LaNyalla melaksanakan salat Dhuha terlebih dahulu.

Kazakhstan: Methane mega-leak went on for months

One of the worst methane leaks ever recorded took place last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan, new analysis shared with BBC Verify has shown.

It is estimated that 127,000 tonnes of the gas escaped when a blowout started a fire that raged for over six months.

Methane is much more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Buzachi Neft, the company that owns the well, denies a “substantial amount” of methane was leaked.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalency Calculator, the environmental impact of such a leak is comparable to that of driving more than 717,000 petrol cars for a year.

“The magnitude and the duration of the leak is frankly unusual,” said Manfredi Caltagirone, head of the UN’s International Methane Emissions Observatory. “It is extremely big.”

Map of the Kazakh region where the methane leak is thought to have taken place

The leak began on 9 June 2023, when a blowout was reported during drilling at an exploration well in the Mangistau region, southwestern Kazakhstan, starting a fire that raged continuously until the end of the year.

It was only brought under control on 25 December 2023. Local authorities told the BBC work is currently being carried out to seal the well with cement.

Map showing clouds of methane coming out of a natural gas well

Natural gas is primarily made of methane, a gas that is transparent to the human eye.

But, when sunlight passes through a cloud of methane, it creates a unique fingerprint that some satellites are able to track.

This particular methane leak was first investigated by the French geoanalytics firm Kayrros. Their analysis has now been verified by the Netherlands Institute for Space Research and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, in Spain.

Looking at the satellite data, scientists found high concentrations of methane were visible on 115 separate occasions between June and December.

Based on those readings, they concluded that 127,000 tonnes of methane escaped from this single well.

Graphic showing varying amounts of methane leaked between June 2023 and January 2024

This could make it the second worst man-made methane leak ever recorded.

Luis Guanter from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, who helped verify the leak, says “only the Nord Stream sabotage may have led to a stronger leak”.

In September 2022, underwater blasts tore apart two pipelines carrying Russian gas to Germany – Nord Stream 1 and 2 – releasing up to 230,000 tonnes of methane into the atmosphere.

According to the International Energy Agency, methane is responsible for about 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution.

While satellite readings can be affected by external factors such as cloud cover, scientists say they are “completely sure” that vast amounts of methane escaped from this individual well.

“We detected methane plumes from five different methane-sensitive satellite instruments,” said Mr Guanter. “Each of these instruments measures methane in a particular way, but we obtained very consistent measurements from all of them.”

In a statement, the Department of Ecology in the Mangistau region confirmed that the concentration of methane in the air exceeded legal limits on 10 separate occasions between 9 June and 21 September.

It also said that, in the hours that followed the initial blowout, methane levels in the air were 50 times higher than allowed.

But Buzachi Neft, the Kazakhstani company that owns the well, denies suggestions that vast amounts of methane were leaked.

The company says its well only contained a “negligible” amount of gas, and that any methane leaked would have burnt as it came out of the borehole.

It says it also believes only water vapour was leaked into the atmosphere, forming large white plumes that were visible from space.

“We have approached the situation responsibly,” the company’s deputy director for strategic development, Daniyar Duisembayev, told the BBC.

Image caption,Plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the well for over six months

External research commissioned by Buzachi Neft – which the BBC has not been given access to – is alleged to cast doubt on Kayrros’ findings.

According to the company, it suggests satellites could have mistaken other gases in the atmosphere – like water vapour – for methane, and that scientists did not account for methane already in the air before the blowout happened.

But the teams involved in verifying Kayrros’ initial probe into the leak deny this.

“We have tested the potential effect of water vapour or smoke, and we did not find any signal of those interacting with our measurements,” said Mr Guanter from the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

He also said scientists only looked for “single methane plumes” and that their methods would not have been affected by methane already in the atmosphere before the accident.

Kazakhstan vows to cut methane emissions

An official probe into the causes of the accident – led by Atyrau’s Industrial Safety Committee – found that Buzachi Neft failed to appropriately supervise the drilling of the well.

It also blamed Zaman Energo, a subcontractor, for numerous failures in the drilling process. Zaman Energo declined to comment on this story.

In a statement, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy told the BBC tackling the leak was a “complex technical operation” and that “there is no universal solution to eliminate similar accidents”.

And yet, it is not the first time major methane leaks have been detected in Central Asia.

Like neighbouring Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan has registered dozens of “super-emitter” events – a phrase used by scientists to describe incidents where large amounts of methane are released into the atmosphere.

But Mr Guanter says the event observed in the Mangistau region stands out. “It is the largest methane leak from ‘normal’ human activities that we have ever detected,” he said. https://surinamecop.com/
